Northampton Saints vs Benetton Treviso
66 - 0

Sun 31st Aug 2008, 15:00 -

Saints turn on the style against Treviso
The Saints ended their pre-season campaign with a ten-try win over Benetton Treviso. The Italians had no answer to the power, pace and accuracy of the Saints, whose tries were scored by Chris Ashton (2), James Downey (2), Lee Dickson (2), Scott Gray, Bruce Reihana, Alan Dickens and a Penalty Try. Reihana added eight conversions.
Hopes of a balmy late summer afternoon had long gone by kick off. But while the rain had blown over as well there was still a gentle mist hanging over the Gardens. More pertinently for the players the pitch was still very greasy and within the first couple of minutes it was apparent that this was going to have an impact on the action with players from both sides slipping regularly.
The wet ball also proved difficult to handle when Treviso full back Emiliano Mulieri fumbled inside his 22, a mistake that was to prove costly. Saints won a penalty at the scrum, Ignacio Fernandez Lobbe won the lineout superbly and Carlos Spencer slid a kick through for Chris Ashton to touch down. Bruce Reihana added the extras and Saints were off and running.

The grubber became a regular tactic for the remainder of the first 10 minutes with Spencer and Reihana both putting Treviso under pressure with well placed kicks. But it was neat handling that took the Saints close to the line thanks to powerful runs from James Downey and Soane Tonga'uiha. And while Sean Lamont was denied a try on his comeback by a knock on Saints soon had another scrum. Lee Dickson ran the ball and Downey was chosen from the myriad of runners to receive the pass for a simple try. Reihana converted again and Saints were 14-0 ahead.

Reihana had a tougher attempt five minutes later when Scott Gray pounced on a loose ball for the third try, reward for the pressure he created for the lineout in the first place. Saints skipper wasn't put off though and the conversion sailed through the posts to extend the lead by a further seven points.

The score board ticked over again five minutes after that. Like the previous try it was powerful defence that was the catalyst, firstly powerful tackling on the 22 then effective rucking that won the ball. Spencer chipped to Lobbe, who in turn found Ashton. Lee Dickson was also in support and it was he who touched down for a 26-0 lead.

There were hairy moments too when the backs failed to control the ball in their own half. They were rescued by the pack, who for another week were having a strong day in the tight. Their power repeatedly disrupted Treviso's ball and when it was their put in the Saints drove forward like men possessed.

Even so the next try was a superb Reihana solo effort, whose run, chip and chase was too much for the visitors' defence to handle. And if this wasn't enough the Saints turned on the style for the fifth try. A clean lineout win went to Spencer, who flipped a blind pass to Lamont. Downey was in support and dived over between the sticks. Reihana converted and the half ended with Saints firmly in control at 40-0.

Although there was a scare for the Saints early in the second half when an attempted Reihana clearance was scuffed straight to a Treviso player it wasn't long before the attacking style was turned on again. Roger Wilson and Scott Gray combined superbly down the middle, and after Paul Shields had gone close on the right wing Dickson was on hand to nip over from the ruck with Reihana adding his sixth conversion.

As the hour mark approached the rain was coming down again and the substitutes seeing some action. But the tries kept coming with two in two minutes for Ashton and Alan Dickens, who had come on as a sub for Dickson only seven minutes previously.

For the next 20 minutes however there was precious little goal line action, despite Saints still dominating. Lamont was pulled back for accidentally running into Alex Rae in the Treviso 22 and later showed his defensive qualities by assuredly dealing with an Italian hack ahead.

There was a final flourish though and appropriately enough it came from the forwards, whose power - even as a seven-man unit - was too much for Treviso to deal with and a penalty try was awarded. As with the first half Reihana's conversion brought an end to the action and Saints left the field with a 66-0 win.

Ecco la "performance" del Benetton in quel di Northampton (gulp)!
Stupisce quel "66" - non tanto lo "ZERO" - del Benetton. Potevano
essere anche 75 o 98 i punti: il succo non cambiava.
  Ciao.
